Why won't the remote control operate the machine? (Just received the item)

"1. The remote control contains a button battery. Before first use, remove the plastic tab from the battery compartment on the back of the remote to enable normal operation.
2. If the battery and remote show no signs of rust or damage after removal but still fail to function, replace them immediately."
